A Passage To Maroc

with one comment

Today is 13th Feb; when this post is published on Saturday the 21st, Nidhi & I will be one day short of flying back from Morocco after a vacation of 9 days. I am not sure if I will be able to blog while in Morocco so I am utilizing WordPress’s cool future-dating to publish this post. We leave aboard Royal Air Maroc this evening at 701pm from JFK. It’s a direct flight that will get us into Casablanca tomorrow early morning. At this time, Nidhi does not know where we are going – I have planned this as a surprise for her. So, she was kept out of the loop on all the planning and I have taken pains to avoid mentioning anything that may help her guess. She has been occasionally restless but has cooperated and has not done any snooping around my email account etc. Maroc (as they say in French, Morocco’s lingua franca) is definitely offbeat, but not known well enough to make it to anyone’s list of dream destinations. By keeping it under wraps, I may have escalated Nidhi’s expectations but I still hope she is pleasantly surprised when she arrives at JFK this evening. Read the rest of this entry »

We All Came Out From Darwin’s Overcoat!

Hi! I am a tortoise, my name is George and and I am celebrating the 200th birth anniversary of my good friend Charles Darwin today. I met him for the first time in 1835 when he visited the Pinta island here at Galapagos. The island had long been a haven for my community. According to an old prophecy passed down the generations, strange creatures walking on hind legs (euphemistically called humans) were to arrive on our island one day. We never believed this – Galapagos (which is incidentally named after the first tortoise ever, a la ‘Adam’) appeared so remote that the mere idea of a human being was incredulous. But the chance visit of Charles proved to be an eye-opener for us and personally for me, it was shattering.

The Day ACP Pradyuman Will Outdo Jack Bauer!

with 5 comments

I never did drugs. But, the last few days have taught me a thing or two about what addiction is. I watched episode 1 of 24’s first season Tuesday evening. I had brought home only the first DVD of season 1. I wasn’t sure how much I would like it. I began watching and by the end of the first episode, I was hooked. And, without pausing, I saw all 4 episodes. By the end of it, I started exhibiting withdrawal symptoms. My stash was over and I was burning.

Octuplets: Intelligent Creation?

with 2 comments

Last week, everyone was agog about the amazing birth of octuplets in a suburb of California. This is the second known case in human history when so many babies were born alive. Apparently, the 46-strong team of medics that delivered them weren’t even expecting the eighth baby. When I heard about it Monday morning, I found it fascinating. Presuming this was natural, my wishes were with the parents. Then, news broke that the mother had 6 other babies earlier, taking the total to 14 now. These were all conceived artificially, through implanted embryos. Today, I learn that the woman in question was ‘obsessed’ with babies. Although I defend her right to conceive and deliver as many babies as she wishes, I am beginning to question the intelligence in all this creation. Read the rest of this entry »
