10 Tips to Write a Blog Nobody Reads

with one comment

This week, I completed one year in blogosphere. My blog’s stats confirm that rarely anyone reads or links into my blog. Sometimes, charitable friends visit the blog to keep my hope afloat. Setting aside those anomalies, I have clearly perfected the art of writing a blog that nobody would read.

Are you sure you want to do this?

with one comment

The other day I wrote a stinking response to an unhelpful email from a colleague and then clicked ‘Send’. As I pressed ‘Send’, I realized that I had forgotten to remove the distribution list of the original email. It was too late and the stinker went to all 10 people whereas I had wanted only one person to get a piece of my mind. At that time, I wished the program had asked me, ‘Are you sure you want to send this message?’ There are several applications out there today that offer a bit of Socratic counseling at the end of an activity by asking of the user: Are you sure you want to do this?

24 – Eighth Season Spoiler

with 2 comments

The seventh season finale of 24 just ended. Once again, the show left millions of us sated yet thirsty for more. The sixth season had ended on a lame note but I remember the fifth season finale was gut-wrenching with the oil tanker headed for Shanghai and all of us sighing for Jack – also, the fourth season ending with Jack headed incognito to Mexico was cool too. The writers have done a great job of resurrecting the edge-of-the-seat season-end cliffhanger. As the clock clicked rapidly towards 8 am, I was wondering where it was headed. But, in a brilliant 2 minutes, Renee Walker stepped into Allen Wilson’s holding room with murder on her mind and at the same time, Kim vowed to not let her dad kick the bucket. I guess I have made clear through one of my earlier posts how much I die to see 24 – now, I live to see the eighth season and here is what I think we will be shown.

We All Came Out From Darwin’s Overcoat!

leave a comment »

Hi! I am a tortoise, my name is George and and I am celebrating the 200th birth anniversary of my good friend Charles Darwin today. I met him for the first time in 1835 when he visited the Pinta island here at Galapagos. The island had long been a haven for my community. According to an old prophecy passed down the generations, strange creatures walking on hind legs (euphemistically called humans) were to arrive on our island one day. We never believed this – Galapagos (which is incidentally named after the first tortoise ever, a la ‘Adam’) appeared so remote that the mere idea of a human being was incredulous. But the chance visit of Charles proved to be an eye-opener for us and personally for me, it was shattering.

Blackberry Storm Causes Outage in the US!!

leave a comment »

Browsing through top stories, as reported by Google News, is a daily habit with me. I was in for some bewilderment this afternoon when I spotted the following the headline under Sci/Tech category: “Blackberry Storm Causes Major AT&T Outages”.  There was an unmistakable image of an iPhone next to it. Underneath, it said that as Walmart began to sell the iPhone 3G in thousands of its stores, a storm caused major AT&T voice and data outages across the US Midwest and along the Eastern Seaboard. Here is the screenshot of Google News I took at 2:16 PM today:

Blackberry (caused) Storm!

Mercifully, the Information Week article that it linked to did not exercise such a leap of thought and described what had really happened – a natural storm.

I have been trying to imagine a conspiracy theory behind why this occurred. Did Google (whose Android is competition to both, iPhone and Blackberry) tried to kill two birds with one stone? Or was it an editorial oversight?

Or, more believably, was it a software glitch?

For once, Google’s mighty crawlers picked up a bad donut.

Your Passports Will Be Mailed To You!

with 6 comments

Those are the magic words that my parents and didi (‘sister’) recently heard at the US Embassy in Delhi after their successful visa interviews that marked the culmination of months of careful planning. For Nidhi and me, getting a visitor’s visa for my folks has been like the all-important science project in school which has to be done with utmost care as it carries a double-digit weightage for the final exams. It all started with a simple notion i.e. how about getting my parents to travel to the US next year?

How Large Hadron Collider caused a run on Wall Street?!

with 3 comments

You heard it here first!!

Markets are haywire, analysts are befuddled and Congress is well, ‘looking at all options’. Reams of pages and bytes of web-pages have been written about the recent crisis on Wall Street but I do not think anyone has yet made this connection. Read the rest of this entry »
