Dee Dee Myers – Single & 31

Last Tuesday (21Oct08), I attended a talk by Dee Dee Myers at the AFP (Association of Finance Professionals) conference in LA. She was stumping for her newly-published book – ‘Why Women should Rule the World’. I joked with some colleagues that I went in to see whether such an indefensible argument could actually be defended. Half-jokingly, I told some others I went to see why Dee Dee would argue for what is already evident.

Jalebii!!

Today, I saw lots of old Indian ads (eighties and nineties) on YouTube. I am not sure why nobody has not yet thought of this but if someone compiled them together, they would sell like hot-cakes. The compilation will be lapped up by us who get nostalgic about anything that reminds us of things like Doordarshan. Others, who did not live then, will buy them for the same reason I bought ‘Freedom at Midnight’.

I am listing below all those ads that were the staple of my childhood. I have tried to suggest their social premise. Please help me complete this list as I would not obviously remember all classic ads. Read the rest of this entry »

Dignity of Labor?

Today, Nidhi & I cleaned the house. It wasn’t fun in any way. Scrubbing the bathtub and the toilet commode is not uplifting for the soul, nor is vacuuming the carpet any more enlightening than doing the dishes. Yet, we had to spend the better part of the day doing this. We did not have a choice. This is what I most detest about living in the US. You live in the wealthiest country in the world yet majority of its middle/working class can not afford to outsource its run-of-the-mill chores. The cost of domestic help is so high that you can afford to buy a new hybrid car on a good day but can not hire a maid for an year. Read the rest of this entry »
